Liquid crystals (LCs) are very important in the study of optics, chemistry, and polymer science. A series of novel hard-hard diblock copolymers containing azobenzene moiety in the side-chain, with different ratios of the block containing the LC monomer were successfully synthesized via RAFT polymerization in anisole solution with PCAEMA macro-RAFT-agent and DOPAM in the presence of AIBN. Kinetic studies on the block copolymerization of the azobenzene-containing LC homopolymer with DOPAM monomer certify that it is a controlled process. A LC homopolymer, PCAEMA with narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn=1.14), was used as a macromolecular chain-transfer agent to prepare the diblock copolymers. The structures and properties of the monomers and the diblock copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, DSC, UV, and GPC, respectively. In addition, their liquid crystallinity and morphological structure were observed by optical polarizing microscopy and AFM. |
