Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) is extensively investigated because of their promising potential application on the energy storage field. The key component in VRFB is the membrane which separates the two electrolyte while allows the transfer of the ions. However, the membrane usually used in VRFB (Nafion®) suffers from the crossover of Vanadium ions which decreases the efficiency of the battery. To reduce the crossover of vanadium ions through Nafion®, natural nanoclay (Montmorillonite-MMT) and organo modified nanoclay (Cloisite 30B®) are introduced into Nafion® to improve the barrier property of the membrane. The Nafion®-nanoclay hybrid membranes are synthesized by the solution casting method. Nafion® recast membrane and Nafion® with 2, 4, 6, 8% nanoclay loading added membranes are fabricated. XRD results reveal that the intercalated nanoclay polymer composites are successfully synthesized. |
