In this study, temperature sensitive random copolymers with FRET donor and acceptor attached to both chain ends are synthesized and their temperature sensitivity is examined on the basis of the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency. N-Isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N-isopropylmethacrylamide (NIPMAM) are chosen as temperature sensitive moieties and are copolymerized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). As a FRET donor and acceptor, Pyrene and coumarin 343 are selected and attached at both ends of the backbone, respectively. Since the copolymer exhibits the lower critical solution temperature behavior, the polymer shows the conformation change from the coil to the globule as the temperature is increased, which results in an on-and-off feature in the FRET efficiency due to the change in the distance between FRET donor and acceptor with temperature variation. The effect of the monomer composition on the FRET efficiency of copolymer will be investigated. |
