Graphene-doped Conducting Polymers for Pseudocapacitance |

We report on conjugating graphene nanosheets with a conducting polymer via a doping process for enabling the composite to deliver highly enhanced performances as a material for electrochemical supercapacitors. Anionically modified, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used as a dopant that was incorporated into polypyrrole (pPy) as a conducting polymer (CP) during an electrodeposition process in the absence of other anions except for the anionic rGO. The architecture built from rGO skeleton skinned by pPy showed impressively enhanced performances superior to those of the same conducting polymers doped with a conventional polymeric dopant (polystyrene sulfonate, pSS). The noteworthy improvement of capacitance (e.g., from 50 to 875 F g-1) comes from the synergetic effect of graphene doping leading to enhanced charge transfer between graphene and the CP, which cannot be achieved from a simple physical mixture of the pair. |
