Characteristics of recycled polyols from flexible polyurethane foam wastes by solvolysis |

Automotive seats are made of flexible polyurethane foams (PUF). Thus, PUFs become parts of automotive shredder residue (ASR) if they were not separated before the shredding. ASRs containing PUFs suffer from corrosive and toxic HCN gas on incinerations. Process to recycle PUF wastes from the end-of-life automotive seats should be developed to prevent the pollution of environments. Glycolysis of waste automotive seats was carried out and polyols were recovered from the glycolysis products by decantation after phase separation of polyol rich phase and isocyanate adduct rich phase. Effects of temperature on the properties of recovered polyol were investigated experimentally. It was found that the hydroxyl values and the amine values of the recycled polyols increased as the glycolysis temperature was increased. It is postulated that the recycled polyols can be used to prepare various PUFs together with virgin polyols. |
