Norbornene and substituted norbornenes are versatile monomers, which can be polymerized using transition metal catalysts to yield vinyl addition polymers, and can also be polymerized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The addition polymers of norbornenes are amorphous and are characterized by a high glass transition temperature (Tg), low dielectric constant, high optical transparency, low birefringence, and low moisture absorption. Thus, these polymers have found use in electronic applications, but the same monomers, when polymerized by ROMP, yield polymers with very different properties. we have polymerized functionalized norbornene derivatives bearing polar adamantane and norbornane side groups through vinyl and ROMP polymerization methods, and investigated their structure- properties relationships by performing x-ray diffraction, thermal (DSC, TGA), mechanical (DMA), optical, dielectric and water permeability measurements. |
