Overall Conformation of Polystyrene in the Nanopores |

We observed the polymer chain conformation in cylindrical nanopores using Small Angle Neutron Scattering. The mixture of h-PS and d-PS is confined in nanopores whose pore diameter is ~30nm (smaller than the radius of gyration of polymer interested), and the overall conformation is analyzed. The scattering intensity along the pore axis shows that the overall conformation along the pore axis is consistent with that of bulk polystyrene. This SANS results of nanoscopically confined polymers also exhibits good agreement with theoritical arguments. This implies that the interpenetration of the polymer chains decreases when the polymer enters the nanopores. We expect this unperturbed chain dimension, that is, reduction of intermolecular entanglement possibly alters other physical properties of polymer in nanoconfinement. |
