Side chain liquid crystalline polymers, (hexadecylsulfonyl) methyl-substituted poly(ethylene oxide) (16SEO-90, 70, 50), were synthesized with varying the degree of substitution of side chain. Structural changes on thermal transition of these polymers were studied by DSC, POM, and X-ray scattering. It was found from the POM and X-ray scattering that the entire sample synthesized exhibited a SmA mesophase at elevated temperature. SAXS measurements showed that the layer of the smectic phase forms a partially interdigitated bilayer structure at room temperature. Particularly, the ordering and mesophase stability in internal structure increased with the increase in the degree of substitution of side chain. In other words, 16SEO-90 with high packing density between side chains exhibited an enhanced thermal mesophase stability among other polymers, presumably due to the increase in the incompatibility between polar backbone parts and non-polar alkyl side chain. |
