Preparation and properties of polyurethane foams from modified epoxidized soybean oil |

Recently, polyurethanes (PUs) based on renewable resources such as vegetable oil are attracting attentions of researchers in industries as well as academia. Soybean oil is one of cheap vegetable oil and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) is commercially available at a relatively low cost. As a part of efforts to develop PUs based on various renewable resources, polyols for rigid PU foams were prepared by a modification preocess via cationic ring opening copolymerization of ESO and ethylene glycol with boron trifluoride diethyl etherate as a catalyst. Polyols of various functionality could be prepared from ESO by the modification process. Properties of the rigid PU foams as well as the characteristics of polyols could be varied for different applications. The polyols based on the ESO have advantages of high functionalities and low viscosities comapred with conventional polyols. |
