To develop fast switchable remote controlled microvalves, we have prepared temperature-responsive hydrogels and iron oxide nanoparticles composite. In this material system, we found that degree of volume change of hydrogels induced by visible-light irradiation could be controlled by thermal behavior of hydrogel. In order to modifying thermal behavior, various compositions of hydrophilic comonomer, N-diethyl acrylamide, were copolymerized with N-isopropylacrylamide. As increase of NDEAm composition in hydrogel, decrease of LCST, hydrogel shrunk more under identical condition. With this relation between light-induced volume change and thermal behavior, we could minimize light irradiation time to achieve specific volume shrink. Furthermore, this system allows for the design of remote controlled microvalve for microfluidic channel. |
