Aromatic polyimides have been known as high performance polymers due to their excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties, good chemical resistance, high dimensional stability, and low dielectric constants. However, one of the drawbacks to the employment of these aromatic polyimides is the difficulty of processing due to their high processing temperature and limited solubility, which are caused by their rigid polymer backbones and strong interchain interactions. Besides, they strongly absorb the visible region of light, resulting in pale yellow or a deep reddish yellow color. To overcome these problems, we introduced trifluoromethyl groups to diamine monomers to reduce the interchain interaction. New diamine monomers were polymerized with commercial aromatic dianhydrides to form new soluble and transparent polyimides. The monomer syntheses, polymerization reactions, and properties of the synthesized polymers will be presented. |
