The role of comonomers of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based copolymers for thermal oxidative stabilization (TOS) was investigated through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. PAN copolymer with neutral comonomer, such as methyl methacrylate, exhibited slow progress of TOS like PAN, indicating general radical mediated processes. Acclerated stabilization behaviors of PAN copolymers with acid comonomers indicated ionic initiation activity of the carboxylic units. Poly(acrylonitrile-co-vinyl acetate) exhibited certain initial induction period, followed by an accelerated TOS in the later stage, indicating in-situ generation of acetic acid during the TOS. Interestingly, PAN-based terpolymer containing both vinyl acetate and itaconic acid exhibited not only the highest but also the fastest progress of TOS among the copolymers, exhibiting synergistic effect of the comonomers. |
