A bone plate is an implant used to immobilize fractured bone segments. Current bone plates, prepared using metal, can occasionally cause a range of problems, such as stress shielding, corrosion and loosening as well as a need for additional surgery to remove the plates. To resolve these drawbacks, polymer based composite materials with desirable mechanical properties, biodegradability, and biocompatibility have been suggested for bone plate fixation as an alternative. In this study, a silk fibroin/bacterial cellulose composite bone plate was simply prepared in an aqueous system. The tensile modulus and strength of the composite bone plate were examined using a universal testing machine, and the biodegradability of the composite bone plate was measured using the phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the morphology of the composite bone plate. |
