The development of novel polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) with high conductivity, stabilities, low fuel crossover and economic adaptability remains an important challenge to the realization of practical fuel cells. We herein report terminally-crosslinked PES membranes as highly conductive and stable polymer electrolytes for both PEMFCs and AEMFCs. The new system was prepared by a thermal crosslinking reaction of an allyl-terminated poly(ether sulfone) (sPES) having either sulfonic acid(for PEMFC) or ammonium salts(for AEMFC). The crosslinked membranes showed an exceptionally high conductivity, and excellent hydrolytic, dimensional, and mechanical stability. The very low methanol permeability is another advantage of the terminally-crosslinked membrane. These results confirm the potential applicability of our newly-prepared crosslinked membranes as promising proton and anion exchange membranes for PEMFCs and AEMFCs, respectively. |
