Chiral ester monomer (CEMA), New photoresponsive optical active monomer, was synthesized by the reaction of 2-acryloylaminopropionic acid and 4-{4-[2-(2-Bromo-ethoxy) -ethoxy]-phenyl-azo}benzonitrile. The CEMA and MMA were polymerized in the presence of radical initiator AIBN to produce four kinds of the corresponding copolymers. The resulting copolymeric thin films exhibited fundamental characteristics for reversible optical digital data storage media. The copolymer films showed an unusual phenomenon, indicating that the optical birefringence increases with increase in temperature when irradiated by a writing beam. In addition, thick films prepared from the copolymers were useful to holographic memory devices by a two wave mixing technique. The copolymer films were observed to have more than 40% of diffraction efficiency. |
