Geometrical modulation of PDMS substrate for sensitivity control of silver nanowire-based strain sensor |

We demonstrate a simple method for the modulation of sensitivity in silver nanowires (AgNWs) resistive type strain sensors with no need to change in material or coating process in the sensory layer. Instead of using planar PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) substrate, we introduced diverse relief structures to the PDMS substrate to induce non-uniform and complex strain, and thereby different distribution of crack density of AgNWs upon stretching. The analysis on the sensory layer and mechanical study reveals that the lower height ratio and higher number of trenches enhances sensitivity, for example, up to a gauge factor (GF) of 926 from 0% to 9.6% strain in this study. The demonstration of wrist motion sensors using our technology depicts the feasibility of relief structure for various ranges of sensors and sensitivity using an identical sensor layer. |
