Fabrication of Zirconia Reinforced Bioactive glass Composites by a New Synthesis Technique |

A composite of bioactive glasses and zirconia was synthesized in an inexpensive hydrothermal chemical route by the use of microwave energy irradiation and successive mixing. Calcium nitrate tetra-hydrate and sodium silicate were used as inexpensive precursors and microwave irradiation was applied for fast synthesis of bioactive glasses. Compositional changes were carried out to synthesis bioactive glass with different Si content. The powders were characterized for their physical and morphological characteristics like glass formation temperature, degree of crystallinity, crystallization temperature etc. Densification behavior was investigated by microwave sintering process and the mechanical properties like density, compressive strength, hardness etc. were investigated for the dense bioactive glass-zirconia composites. Apatite formation behavior was investigated by inserting the composites in simulated body fluid. |
