Collagen is the major component of the extracellular matrix and the most abundant protein in vertebrates. Collagen has been regarded as one of the most useful biomaterials in biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. Unfortunately, most collagen has been extracted from animals, which raises some concerns such as immunogenicity and the possibility of zoonosis. Herein, we suggest human adipose tissue as a plentiful source for human collagen. Adipose tissue is the most prevalent tissue in the human body. We have developed the extraction process of collagen from human adipose tissue. We also provide a partial characterization of the collagen, as compared with a vertebrate counterpart, in view of its use as an alternative collagen source. We believe that the human collagen derived from adipose tissue can be an alternative to animal-derived collagen in many biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. |
