Electrochemical (EC) reduction of carbon dioxide into C1 products with high energy density has attracted attention due to the demands for renewable energy as a substitute for fossil fuel. Herein, we demonstrate an EC CO2 reduction system where the cathode consists of hierarchically structured Au catalysts in acetonitrile-water mixture electrolyte. To be more specific, the Au catalysts were prepared by oxygen plasma treatment on the Au foil, followed by thermal annealing process, to increase the current density for the selective production of carbon monoxide with over 90% of Faradaic efficiency. Products were analyzed by gas chromatography with FID and TCD, and Faradaic efficiencies were evaluated by chronoamperometry. Furthermore, the Faradaic efficiency, the stability of the catalyst, and the production rate were significantly improved due to increased number of active sites of the catalyst and expanded surface area, compared with the ones from a bare Au electrode. |
