The ability to modify the structure of electron donating polymers such as alkyl chain length and side chain density is crucial in controlling the optical/electrochemical properties of these materials. Here, we report the synthesis of a novel conjugated polymer which includes different numbers of the thiophene units adjacent to main backbone in the repeating unit. Bulk-heterojunction solar cells fabricated from new polymer, consisting of new polymer:PCBM, showed power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.5 % for the new polymer:PCBM based device. In addition, a new polymer:fullerene bis adducts based photovoltaic device showed a Voc of 0.89 V and a PCE of 2.2%. The effects of alkyl chain length and the side chain density on the optical, electrochemical and structural properties of the polymers were carefully investigated to elucidate a molecular structure–device function relationship. |
