Gas barrier nanocoatings are already studied by combining polyelectrolyte and graphene oxide with layer-by-layer deposition. These films offer same properties as that of current inorganic barriers. Furthermore, they overcome the drawbacks such as flexibility. However, these films also have relative stiffness and inadequate stretchiness. Therefore, we incorporated multilayers consisting of highly ductile polyurethane and graphene oxide by layer-by-layer assembly. Consequently, PU/GO thin films deposited on PET substrate lead to a substantial decrease in oxygen permeation as compared with the pristine PET substrate. In addition, the effect of ductile polyurethane results in significant flexibility of thin films while maintaining their gas barrier after being bended and stretched. It is because of their barrier properties and flexibility that these films are potentially useful for packaging and protection of flexible electronics. |
