Microencapsulation is a useful technology to functionalize organic or inorganic materials in the pharmaceutical, medical, foods, cosmetics, and agricultural industries. In the present study, the alkyl-modified silica microcapsules (spherical, 1 ~ 50 um) containing lipophilic active compounds were synthesized by in-situ method via O/W emulsion process. The content and kind of alkyl groups in Si-O-Si networks played a major role on the strength and the pore size distributions of the microcapsules. The strength of the microcapsules decreased with increasing the contents of alkyl groups. The pore size distributions of the microcapsules were in a mesoporous range around 170 Å, and decreased with incorporating alkyl groups in the Si-O-Si networks up to 30 Å. The characteristics of the microcapsules focused on morphology, size and pore distributions were studied by SEM, DLS, 29Si-NMR and BET. |
