Chemically and Electrically Tunable Block Copolymer Photonic Gels: Exceptionally Large Tunability via Uniaxial Swelling |

Many applications of photonic band gap (PBG) materials have been limited by their limited tunability and sensitivity. We report the preparation of chemically and electrically tunable PBG materials from the self-assembly of polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) where the P2VP blocks are chemically quaternized and crosslinked to form lamellar gel layers. Because of the unique meso-lamellar gel structures, in which the swellable P2VP gel layers are bound on the glassy PS layers, our photonic gels (PG) expand uniaxially normal to the substrate, which gives large tunability from the UV-visible to the near-IR region. We demonstrate dynamically and reversibly tunable PG in an aqueous salt solution. |
