Structurally isomeric mono-, di-, tri-, and tetra-substituted copper (II) phthalocyanine dyes were synthesized to evaluate their characteristics on the number of the substituent. The bulky substituent, 2,5-bis-(1,1-dimethylbutyl)-methoxyphenol, was introduced to improve their solubility at peripheral (β) position of phthalocyanine. And copper was substituted in the core of one. As the number of substituents increases, phthalocyanine dyes were blue to green in color and their solubility increased gradually in industrial solvent due to a decrease of dye aggregation by steric effect. The optical and thermal properties of the synthesized dyes were estimated with UV-Visible spectrophotometer, TGA and DSC. Dye-based color filters were manufactured with the dyes for use in liquid crystal display (LCD) color filters. Among them, mono-substituted CuPc and tetra-substituted CuPc showed possible optical properties for blue and green colorants in LCD color filters, respectively. |
