This study is about the effect of surface functionalization on the interfacial adhesion between amorphous PS and semi-crystalline PA6. The PS surface was functionalized by low energy Ar+ ion beam with a reactive O2 gas, O2 plasma treatment and complex process. Surface roughness was measured using atomic force microscope. XPS revealed that oxygen containing groups was introduced by surface modification. Fracture toughness was calculated using asymmetric double cantilever beam test with various bonding time, temperature. The fracture toughness increased after some induction time of bonding, then it reached a plateau value or decreased. The fracture toughness increased with the bonding temperature, showed a maximum at 210, and then decreased at a higher temperature of 220. This behavior was plausibly explained by in terms of the occurrence of two different failure mechanisms―adhesive failure at the interface in early period for short bonding times, cohesive failure in later period. |
