Recently, the injection laryngoplasty techniques for the regeneration of vocal fold have gained popularity because of its initial low cost, minimal invasiveness, and low morbidity as compared to surgical repair method. A number of injectable materials have been proposed and tested in the clinical setting of glottis insufficiency, resulting from a variety of etiologies but all had limitations, such as poor long-term durability, migration from the injection site, inflammation, granuloma formation. In this study, we prepared growth factor (bFGF)-immobilized polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres as an injectable bioactive bulking agent which can provide a bulking effect and stimulate smooth muscle in vocal fold for effective treatment of vocal fold paralysis. The growth factor release and adhesion/proliferation of vocal fold fibroblasts on the growth factor-immobilized microspheres, and their regeneration behavior of the tissue surrounding the vocal fold was also investigated. |
