Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is a hybrid material containing silicone-oxygen nanostructure cages and eight variable organic side groups. Biomax® is an ethylene copolymer designed to modify Polylactic Acid (PLA) for improved mechanical properties in packaging. Biomax is miscible with PLA, as the Biomax/PLA blend is a onephase mixture with a single glass transition temperature. In this study, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), Biomax and octaisobutyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (ibPOSS) composites were prepared by compounding in the Brabender. The concentration of POSS was varied at 1, 3, and 5 wt %, and the PLA/Biomax ratio was also changed. Thermal properties were studied by using (DSC) and (TGA), and mechanical properties were measured by (UTM) and IZOD impact test. Impact strength was increased as the POSS content was increased. Distribution of POSS in polymer matrices was studied by using (FE-SEM). |
