Synthesis of poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylonitrile) copolymers and their uses in binders of the anodes for lithium and sodium ion batteries |

Tin-based anode is one of the most promising anode candidates owing to its high theoretical capacity of 992 mAh/g, which is more than twice higher than the capacity of graphitic carbon. Due to a major volume change of tin during lithiation/delithiation processes, the resulting pulverization and a loss of electrical connection cause serious irreversible capacity loss and poor cyclability. To solve this problem, we have synthesized copolymers which contain acrylonitrile (AN) and tert-butyl acrylate (t-BA) monomers by radical polymerization and used as a binder of anode. Synthesized poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylonitrile) copolymers were characterized by NMR, GPC, TGA, and DSC. We demonstrate the effect of different polymer binders such as PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride), PAN (polyacrylonitrile), PAA (polyacrylic acid), and synthesized poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylonitrile) copolymers on battery performance of tin-based anode in rechargeable lithium and sodium ion batteries. |
