Polyurethane (PU) is one of the versatile polymers that have been widely used in various fields such as foams, coating, adhesives, rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers. Poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA) has excellent properties, including good heat resistance and adjustable compatibility with styrenic polymers and polar polymers. Futhermore, maleic anhydride groups (MnA) in SMA can be used for modification of SMA backbone to improve its thermal and mechanical properties. In this study, poly(PU-co-SMA) (P-SMA) was synthesized through ring opening reaction of MnA in SMA with isocyanate groups of PU prepolymer. It is postulated that the introduction of amide and imide groups on PU backbone can largely enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of PU. |
