New proton exchange membranes were prepared and evaluated as polymer electrolytes for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Sulfonated-fluorinated poly(arylene ether) copolymers were synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution by reacting two hydroxy monomers with decafluorobiphenyl. The synthesized copolymers were characterized by 1H-, 19F-NMR and FT-IR. The thermal stabilities of the copolymers were characterized by DSC and TGA. The transport properties such as proton conductivity, water uptake, and swelling ratio, of the proton exchange membranes were observed as changing the sulfonation degree (DS). And the morphological studies of the membranes were characterized by AFM. |
