Pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) is a commonly used precursor of carbon materials. A quinoline insoluble (QI) content is an important property for a preparation of artificial graphite using binder pitch. In this study, binder pitch was prepared using PFO by heat-treatment at 340 °C for 4 h in different amounts of carbon black (CB) loading to control QI content. Softening point (SP) and QI of pitch were measured using standard methods of ASTM D 2416 and ASTM D 4746, respectively. The SP of pitch based on CB-loaded PFO is decreased with the increase in the amount of CB loading, whereas the QI content is increased. It is due to volatile components in PFO which are absorbed onto the surface of CBs. This result indicates that CBs are performed as nuclei for the growth of QI particles. Therefore, QI content in PFO-based binder pitch is manipulated with CB loading. |
