Positive Effects of Nitrogen functional groups on electrocatalytic activity of electrodes for redox flow batteries |

The most widely used electrodes in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) are graphite felt because of their porous 3-D structures, high conductivities and corrosion resistance in highly acidic electrolytes. However, the poor reactivity of the relevant vanadium species on graphite felt electrodes represents a considerable obstacle in the enhancement of the energy efficiencies of VRFBs. For this reason, various treatment method have been developed for improving electrochemical activity of graphite felt electrodes. In this study, we devised direct polymer coating methods for the fabrication of nitrogen-doped graphite felt using a dopamine and pyrrole as an eco-friendly nitrogen source. A thin and uniform layer can be directly coated onto the graphite felt surface via chemical oxidative polymerization. After thermal treatment, the surface of carbon felt electrodes were successfully implemented with nitrogen functional groups which acted as active sites for vanadium redox reactions. |
