New triblock linear polymer containing flexible coil (PEG block), liquid crystalline rod (biphenyl block), and highly hydrophobic rod (perfluorinated alkane block) was synthesized. Rod-coil-rod molecules are demonstrated to self-assemble into a rich variety of different liquid crystalline structures of nanoscale dimensions through the combination of shape complementarities and repulsive interaction of rigid, flexible, and highly hydrophobic parts as an organizing force. It also exhibited liquid crystalline properties. The thermal behaviors were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction. |
