Sewage sludge was used to produce biodiesel by two-step process comprised of extraction and transesterification steps. When the total volume of solvent mixture was 8 mL/g-sludge with the volume ratio of chloroform and methanol being 1 to 2, the highest lipid extraction (7.5%) was achieved. The biodiesel yield was 2.5 %(g-biodiesel/g-lipid) when using alkaline catalyst (NaOH) while it was 31.4 % when using acid catalyst (H2SO4). The optimal acid concentration, methanol volume, reaction temperature and reaction time were determined to be 0.25 mL/g-lipid, 25 mL/ g-lipid, 60 °C and 4 h, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, the biodiesel yield was 33.0 %. |
