Synthesis and Photoluminescence Properties of Red-emitting Li(Y,Gd)O2:Eu3+ Phosphors |

Eu3+-doped LiYO2 phosphor has been reported as a novel red phosphor for wide color gamut backlight of LCD. Due to the thermal treatment at high temperature for a solid-state reaction, however, the particle size of the synthesized phosphor is too large to apply as a luminescent component for high-definition screen. Thus, it needs to reduce the particle size of the phosphor with high efficiency. In this work, the synthesis of Li(Y,Gd)O2:Eu3+ phosphor using a liquid-phase precipitation method was performed. The rare earths (RE=Y,Gd,Eu) chloride solution with pH adjustment was precipitated by the addition of oxalic acid. The precipitate of rare earths oxalate was mixed with an excess of lithium source and then sintered at 750℃. Crystalline phase, morphology and photoluminescence properties of the synthesized Li(Y,Gd)O2:Eu3+ phosphor particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and photoluminescence spectrometer, respectively. On the basis of PL emission intensity, the chemical composition of Li(Y,Gd)O2:Eu3+ was optimized. At the optimized composition, the luminance and the color coordinates of the phosphor were improved compared with those of commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphor. |
