The nano-size silica sphere has been applied to electronic substrates, thin film substrates, electrical insulators, thermal insulators, humidity sensors, HPLC filler and in bio-technology. Generally, the nano-sized silica sphere is fabricated by sol–gel, alkoxide, and emulsion method. Emulsion is difficult to control particle size, but sol-gel method can synthesize easily monodispersed nano-size silica sphere. In this study, the particle size of the nano-sized silica sphere was controlled by reaction parameter such as different types of silicon alkoxides, alcohols as solvent, catalyst concentration, [silican alkoxide]/[H2O] ratio, reaction temperature, reaction time. It was characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and BET surface analysis. The growth of silica particle reaches steadystate after 3 hr (240 nm). As increasing ammonia concentration, silica was observed to have narrow particle distribution and its size increased. However, particle size decreased as increasing [silican alkoxide]/[H2O] ratio. Particle size can be controlled in the range of 30–800 nm by using above reaction parameters. |
