Dispersion of the Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes using poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]-co-polystyrene. |

Single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) have been attracting great attention due to their remarkable mechanical and electrical properties with many potential applications. However, SWNTs exist as a bundle due to a strong intertube van der Waals attraction. In order to utilize those properties, efficient dispersion of SWNTs is firstly required. In this study, poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]-co-polystyrene(PDMAEMA-co-pSt) was synthesized and used as polymeric dispersants for SWNTs in organic solvent. PDMAEMA-co-pSt with different copolymer composition were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) and characterized by gel permeation chromatography(GPC) and 1H NMR. With PDMAEMA-co-pSt, SWNTs were effectively dispersed through non-covalent functionalization by ultrasonication in tetrahydrofuran. Unbundled structures of SWNTs were observed by transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Using the turbiscan optical analyzer, dispersion stabilities of SWNTs were compared. |
