Recently considerable effort has been made to develop alternative energy resources. Biodiesel is made from vegetable oils or animal fats by transesterification with methanol using an acid or base catalyst. In this work, superacid catalysts, SO42-/Bi2O3, SO42-/TiO2, have been prepared for transesterification of soybean oil to produce biodiesel. The effect of various factors such as ratio of catalyst to oil, reaction temperature, reaction time, mole ratio methanol to oil, were studied to optimize the reaction conditions. It was found that the reaction rate increases with increasing acidity of catalyst. |
