Rylene Dye-Loaded Probe Nanoparticles for Visible-Infrared Imaging |

Rylene dyes exhibit superior photophysical properties including outstanding chemical and photochemical stabilities as well as high fluorescence quantum yields (FQYs). However, the rylene chromophores are highly hydrophobic to use them as biological molecular probes unless functionalized to ensure water-solubility. We present a general incorporation method to load rylene family within micelle core of triblock copolymer and stabilize the core. The polymer-encapsulated rylene dyes in confined hydrophobic environment fairly preserve their FQYs in aqueous media. Twenty one probe nanoparticles (PNPs) loaded with rylene dyes, in the spectral region of visible and infrared (400 – 750 nm) were prepared and their photophysical properties were characterized. The PNPs may pave the way for a new class of fluorescence probes applicable in in vitro and in vivo imaging. |
