Graphene oxide based hybrid material for gene delivery and imaging |

Non-viral gene delivery carriers are preferred over viral carriers owing to the associated safety concerns with viral carriers. Several cationic vectors such as polymers, liposomes draw significant attention. Among cationic polymers, high molecular weight BPEI(HMW BPEI) has been widely considered as a gold standard for gene delivery carriers but the higher cytotoxicity. Low molecular weight(LMW) BPEI despite its poor transfection efficacy in comparison to HMW BPEI is used prevalently for their low cytotoxicity. However, LMW BPEI exhibited enhanced cellular uptake and transfection efficiency when hybrid with other materials. Therefore we presumed that hybrid gene carrier fabricated by conjugation of LMW BPEI to Graphene Oxide(GO) would increase the effective molecular weight of LMW BPEI, and consequently improve condensation with DNA, and transfection efficiency. Furthermore, the BPEI conjugated GO exhibited the potential as a bio imaging agent and photothermal therapeutic agent. |
