We have established an optimum reaction condition for in-situ grafting polymerization of 3- and 4-phenoxybenzoic acids onto the surface of MWNT in polyphosphoric acid/phosphous pentoxide (4:1) medium. By using the condition, various nanocomposites were prepared by changing feed ratio of MWNT/monomer (2/98, 4/96, 8/92, 16/84, 32/68, 64/36, w/w). The overall evidences on the basis of the data from Soxhlet extraction experiment, elemental analysis (EA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), FT-IR spectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) supported covalent grafting of m-poly(phenyl-ether-ketone, m-PEK) and p-poly(phenyl-ether-ketone, p-PEK) onto the surface of MWNT. Further investigations on nanocomposites into the forms of fiber and film are under progress to find out the threshold point, where thermal and electrical conductivities break up depending upon MWNT content. |
