In this study, nontoxic, stable, and edible internal decorporation agents were fabricated for the selective removal of ingested cesium from gastrointestinal tract using Prussian blue nanoparticles (PB NPs) tightly modified on cellulose aerogel. PB NPs, commercially available drugs as cesium decorporation agents, were shown to be highly toxic, while PB-cellulose aerogel (PB-CA) composite was nontoxic. As expected, the PB-CA composite selectively decontaminated 99.43 % of cesium within 10 min in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). Although PB NPs were spoiled in SIF, PB-CA well protected PB NPs in SIF owing to non-releasing PB NPs. These findings reinforce that such the promising PB-CA can be used as an effective cesium decorportaion agent in unexpected radioactive cesium spill accident. |
