제목 Direct synthesis of ethylene glycol from polyols on the carbide catalysts
초록 The transformation of biomass-derived polyols to useful chemicals has been intensively studied in recent years. Ethylene glycol derived from biomass with terephthalic acid can be used as a starting material for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) through environmentally benign process. Therefore, the direct synthesis of ethylene glycol from polyols was studied on the metal carbide catalysts, and the reaction was carried out in a batch reactor at reaction temperature of 230°C and reaction pressure (H2) of around 20 bar with 5wt%polyol in aqueous solution and 1.0g catalyst. In the present study, tungsten carbide catalyst was synthesized by hydrogenation of tungsten precursor on activated carbon, and the carbide catalysts were efficient to transform polyols to ethylene glycol which is significantly depending on H2 pressures. The conversion and selectivities were analyzed by liquid chromatography.
