Thermal diffusivity of polyamide/graphite composites |

The thermal diffusivity (TD) of graphite intercalated compound (GIC)/polyamides (PA6, PA66 and PA12) and graphite/PA composites were investigated. Composites were prepared by an in-situ exfoliation melting process and thermal diffusivity of the composites was measured by a laser flash method. The surface chemistry of the GIC and graphite was investigated using FTIR and the fracture morphology of the composites was observed by FE-SEM. Crystallinity and melting point of the composites measured by DSC. TD of the in-situ exfoliation processed PA/GIC composites showed a significant improvement over that of conventional PA/graphite composites. We suggest that the larger flake size and high expansion ratio of the GIC during the in-situ exfoliation process provided thermal diffusivity enhancement as well as 18 times at 20vol% of GIC. Melting point and crystallinity of the composites decreased with addition of the graphitic filler while the GICs provided higher crystallinity graphite ones. |
