Flexible or rigid foams which are commonly classified depending on their mechanical performance and crosslink densities are the most important commercial polyurethane products. Due to their superior mechanical properties and low density, rigid polyurethane foams are widely applied to building insulation and domestic appliances. However, the polyurethane industry is facing environmental challenges resulted from flame retardants used during the polymerization process. In the present studies, three types of non-halogen phosphorus-based flame retardants(FR) were synthesized with diaryl alkyl phosphate esters, aromatic phosphate esters and phosphonium nitron flame retardants, which were then identified by Gas chromatography(GC) and FTIR. Rigid polyurethane foams prepared from various concentrations of these FR were examined using standard flammability test(ASTM, D-3014), FTIR, TGA and also mechanical and thermal properties were measured. |
