제목 Surface modification on the alignment of liquid crystal molecules by using polyimide
초록 It is important to understand the effects on arrangement and alignment of molecules on polymer surface. To clarify the aligment mechanism of liquid crystal molecules on polyimides, we introduced photo-sensitive chalcone molecules on the polymer surface. CBDA-DA-n (polyimide) was synthesized and characterized by NMR and IR. Anisotropic properties were introduced to the polyimide using polarized UV-irradiation. The main purpose of this study is to differentiate main chain effects and side-chain effects on surface alignment of dipolar aromatic molecules including liquid crystals and biphenyls. The dipolar aromatic molecules evaporated on the alignment layer were characterized with polarized spectroscopy and the anisotropic properties were compared with anisotropic polymer surface. Two different type of aromatic molecules are evaporated. For the background experiment, non-polar pentacene was used. A dipolar 4-Hydroxy-4-biphenyl-carbonitrile (HBC) was also evaporated on the photo-aligned polyamide surface, which has chalcone on the polyamide surface. HBC was evaporated slowly for the extensive molecular interactions. Polarized UV-visible and FT-IR spectroscopic results indicated that the HBC and pentacene molecules are aligned perpendicular to the polarization axis of light. The size and roughness of crystal images obtained from Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) are dependent on the surface alignment of polymer films.
