Ionic liquids, which usually consist of organic cations (e.g., imidazolium and pyridinium) and inorganic anions, have been widely studied as alternatives for organic solvents because of their non-volatile and inflammable nature and their catalytic effect on a broad range of chemical reactions. In this study, we have investigated the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 in ionic liquids such as BMIMBF4. CO2 has been successfully reduced when ionic liquids have been used as electrolytes and liquid media. CO was produced and hydrogen production barely occured. Their catalytic effect has been clearly shown in cyclic voltammetry. However, their catalytic effect for CO2 redction has been shown to disappear in the presence of metal porphyrin molecules such as Sn-tetra(p-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrin (Sn-TCPP) and hydrogen production drastically increased. |
