Photo-patterning of the polymer films into submicron or nano scale is increasingly important in the fields of microelectronics, micromachining, and photonics. We have investigated one step photo-process of formation of holographic surface relief structures with very large amplitude on various azobenzene functionalized polymer films. We have clearly demonstrated that the recording process is a new photonic process which could be observed only in the azobenzene functionalized polymers so far. The surface modulation was due to the lateral migration of the polymer chains. Multiple images could be superimposed at the same spot on the polymer films leading to a number of complex structures such as orthogonal, blazed, circular gratings, beat and honey-comb structures, and most recently double stranded super-helix structures. Various photonic devices based on this patterning will be discussed. |
