제목 Nematic liquid crystals for polarization grating and lasing applications
초록 Liquid crystal belongs to an important class of optical materials owing to the intrinsic property of order and mobility. The nematic liquid crystals can be doped with photo-active molecules to achieve an ordering required for a photonic application. When doped with an azo-benzene moiety, a polarization grating can be inscribed holographically via photo-isomerization process. The holographic grating incorporating the orbital angular momentum of light will be presented. On the other hand, when doped with a chiral agent and laser dye, a formation of chiral nematic liquid crystal structure takes place. Two orthogonal modes of in-phase and out-phase polarization standing wave allows for a lasing operation near the bandgap edges of reflection spectra. A one-dimensional spatial tuning of the laser wavelength will be presented.
