Metal-Organic Frameworks are attractive as energy-efficient gas separation materials. Especially, ZIF-8 has great potential for use in C3 olefin separation. The present work discusses the C3H6/C3H8 separation performance of the membrane from an industrial perspective, such as high feed pressure, sweep-free permeate conditions, stage cut, and recovery ratios. Then, the facile modification of ZIF-8 membranes through a vapor phase ligand treatment (VPLT) method to tune their separation performance towards smaller molecules will be presented. Of particular interest is the observed stable O2/N2 selective performance, which compares favorably with that of optimized gas separation polymeric membranes. VPLT is a versatile method, applicable to membranes made by different methods. When combined with various linker combinations, it extends the applicability of MOF membrane processing to unprecedented levels of tunability for specific applications without sacrificing scalable processability. |
